Piece sacrifice games
Notes by Occyroexanthub:
Having seen yesterday's Leela's Queen sacrifice with 38.Qf6+! ( https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=16&div=p&game=22 ), in the history of TCEC divP's only 2 other times a Queen sacrifice has been made where the side to make the sac to not gain the other Queen in next move or to gain equal material (e.g QxR RxQ and then something takes the Rook so we gave Q for 2 Rooks). These were:
- Ginkgo - Fisbo, S11 divP move 104.Qxc7! winning https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=11&div=p&game=248
- The other was Jonny 8 - Fire 5, S9 stage 3(the divP of then) with Fire playing 38...Qe7 to defend itself from mate, but Fire made that Q-sac because it already had 2 Queens! A Funny game https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=9&stage=3&game=152
I have found in sufi games only 2 true Queen sacrifices where it's not for having a short mate(mate in 1 or 2) after the move or just to return material after that.
- sufi13 SF-Komodo 37.Qe7+ only move to save SF from loss. https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=13&div=sf&game=9
- sufi14 SF-Leela 41.Rxe5!! a pretty Q sac to finish black https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=14&div=sf&game=66
- but this was pretty too: sufi11 Houdini-SF 82.Qh8+ stalemate! https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=11&div=sf&game=6
Rook sac for DivP/stage 4 was a disappointment. I did not find any satisfactory Rook sacrifice through all seasons 4-15. Criteria was give Rook for Pawn or nothing, where the side to give the sac, to not gain of course material back or to mate in next 4 plies. I found only this:
- S13 divP Fire-Komodo: Komodo played 28...Rxe4!! forcing a nice perpetual or else black would lose. https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=13&div=p&game=70
These were pretty cases but pretty trivial also i would say:
- S7 stage4 Stockfish-Houdini: Stockfish played the only winning move 58.Rf7+! but not a real Rook sac as black did not accept it and even if he did then Qxe2 would win a Rook back. https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=7&stage=4&game=57
- S11 divP Houdini-Stockfish: Houdini played the pretty 36.Rxa5 securing a draw but there were other moves that would draw too. https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=11&div=p&game=36
- S11 divP Fizbo-Stockfish: SF played the nice 59...Rxe5 to finish the game but most moves were winning anyway. https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=11&div=p&game=155
- S11 divP Fire-Stockfish: Fire played 39.Rxf6 to secure the draw even though other moves would draw also. https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=11&div=p&game=274
- S11 divP Chiron-Fire: Chiron played 37.Rxh6! to draw the dame with perpetual. The only move that draws. https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=11&div=p&game=293
- S12 divP Komodo-Fire: Komodo played 39.Rxg7 to draw the game. https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=12&div=p&game=88
- S13 divP Ethereal-Komodo: Ethereal played 40.Rxg7 to draw the game. https://www.tcec-chess.com/archive.html?season=13&div=p&game=23
